DistributionThree widely separated counties: Edgecombe, Stokes, and Jackson. Other specimens from 7 counties are all from cultivated plants.

Native of the Neotropics; in N.A. MA to Ont. south to FL and TX; also CA.
AbundanceVery rare. Tobacco simply does not show much ability to grow out of cultivation.
Habitat"Field", "waste place", and "waif growing in seedbed abandoned for season" (Jackson Co.). There ought to be a monument on the Duke University campus, or at least in Durham, to honor the importance of the plant to the founding and establishment of the university and to the local economy!
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting June-October.
IdentificationCultivated Tobacco is familiar to North Carolinians, at least until the early 2000s when most tobacco farmers switched to other crops after a series of regulations -- for health concerns -- finally reduced financial incentive.
